PLANS for a children's play area in a north Durham community are to be approved despite objections from some residents.
Planning officers have recommended that Chester-le-Street District Council's planning committee meeting next Monday approves the development in Front Street, Nettlesworth.
The proposals for the new Nettlesworth Community Green include the installation of a children's play area with swings, roundabout and a play frame, as well as the creation of access paths.
The play site would be enclosed by a 1.2m high fence.
Objections from residents include the prospect of increased anti-social behaviour among youths in the area, and it is felt it would spoil the recent environmental improvements at the community green.
Durham Constabulary, which supports the scheme, noted that all play areas are under the potential threat of vandalism. But it considered the proposed site to be one of the best to help keep problems to a minimum.
In recommending approval, planning officers said the site would be towards the rear corner of the site, minimising any visual impact and locating it farther away from a busy road.
It will also ensure that the majority of the community green remains open.
