A THOUSAND properties in the district of Easington are feeling the heat thanks to a free home insulation initiative to help the elderly keep warm.
Hundreds of households have had free loft and cavity wall insulation and low energy light bulbs installed since the scheme began.
To mark its success, £50 worth of Argos vouchers were presented to May Martin, of Murton, whose home was the thousandth property to benefit from the scheme.
The Over-60s Insulation scheme helps homeowners 60 and over reduce their fuel bills, stay warmer in their homes and combat cold-related illness.
John Freak, Easington District Council executive member for social inclusion, said: "It's no surprise that this scheme is proving such a success.
"Good insulation is a great way of keeping down your fuel bills and staying warmer and I would encourage anyone who hasn't yet applied to the scheme to call as soon as they can."
