THE weather may have caused havoc on the roads, but yesterday's dusting of snow had its plus side - creating stunning picture-postcard scenes across the region.

Those who had yearned for a white Christmas had their prayers answered a couple of days late, as many parts of the North-East and North Yorkshire became winter wonderlands.

The Northern Echo's photographers captured these striking images as the traditional winter weather appeared to begin in earnest.

Pictured above, heavy snowfall in the village of Blanchland, in Northumberland, made it a Christmas card scene, and left, a woman braves the elements with her dog in the Shotley area of Derwentside. Right, the snow-covered gateway to the Pennines yesterday, near Carterway Heads, in the Derwentside area.
