A MIDDLE-AGED man is critically ill in hospital after he fell 40ft from an escalator during a night out.
The 45-year-old Newcastle man, who has not been named, fell head-first over the banister of the escalator at The Gate entertainment complex, in the city centre.
He suffered serious head and spinal injuries in the accident, which happened at about 1.10am on Sunday.
He was left unconscious after the fall from the upper floor to the ground floor of the centre.
He was taken to Newcastle General Hospital, where his condition last night was critical, but stable.
Police said the fall was not considered suspicious, but would like to hear from revellers who were in the complex and who may have seen the incident.
Anyone with information is asked to ring police on 0191-214 6555 ext 62144.
