THE tax credit system is turning Christmas into a holiday hell for some Darlington families, according to the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).
Darlington CAB said letters from the Tax Credits Office about the scheme have been incomprehensible, with many contradicting the last message received.
Norman Wright, welfare benefits workers at Darlington CAB, said: "I see a number of Darlington families who report overpayments arising from Inland Revenue error, and where people have reported changes in circumstance which have not been acted upon."
Mike Hill, manager of the Darlington bureau, said: "Many tax credit recipients pride themselves on not getting into debt, but Tax Credits Office mistakes can plunge them into it.
"Clients can go through the distress and trauma of facing heavy repayment demands only to find out there was no overpayment in the first place."
Mr Hill said that the changes Chancellor Gordon Brown has made in his pre-budget speech should make a huge difference to many clients in the coming year.
Anyone who doesn't understand why payments have changed can ring the tax credit helpline on 0845 300 3900. Any changes in circumstances should be reported to their Tax Credits Office.
People can also visit Darlington CAB at Bennet House, Horsemarket, for help or telephone the advice line (01325) 380755.
