TWO play areas in Teesdale are to be improved over the winter.
Work is to begin to make the play areas at Scar Top, Barnard Castle and at Stainton Grove more suitable and accessible to a wider range of children.
The project, which is being co-ordinated by Teesdale District Council and Groundwork West Durham will also improve the play equipment.
The improved play areas will be for children and young adults and will have creative designs which aim to be challenging and take children to their limits.
The play area at Stainton Grove will also have refurbishment work to the adjoining playing field, as it will be enclosed by fencing and accessible to all.
The area will also include a variety of equipment for toddlers, which is being supported by Sure Start.
A spokesman for the council said: "Teesdale Leisure Services wants to draw children together to have healthy exercise, fun, and develop confidence and friendship.
"The play areas will also offer children the challenge to play longer, helping to develop agility, flexibility and co- ordination."
The play area developments are scheduled to be completed early next year.
Funding for the project has been provided by Teesdale District Council, European Regional Development, Sure Start, the Urban and Rural Renaissance Initiative and Community Funding.
