A VILLAGE has been offered a £42,000 grant to improve its sports field.

The total cost of work to improve the field at Heighington is £80,000 - and at a meeting of the parish council last week, councillors were told the village had been offered almost £42,000 from the Football Foundation towards the total cost of a new car park, fencing and drainage.

Plans to develop the field have been controversial, with some villagers suggesting that a grant from the Football Foundation would mean the field would be used mainly for football.

Heighington Parish Council is to call a public meeting to discuss the Football Foundation offer next month.

The rest of the money is to come from parish funds, which include about £10,000 which has been donated by local people.

A group in the village is trying to raise money to build a new play area on the site. It has so far raised £12,000 - but needs £35,000 for the equipment.

The meeting also heard that parts of the goalmouth areas had been worn away.

Councillor Gerald Lee suggested the pitches were moved slightly every year, so the ground got equal wear.
