PLANS to demolish a former nursing home and replace it with a block of apartments have been rejected by councillors.

Members of Wear Valley District Council's development control committee voted against proposals for 18 apartments at the former Springfield House Nursing Home, in Willington, which were submitted by Bowburn-based Dunelm Castle Homes Limited.

The plans were discussed at a meeting of the committee and members felt the development did not allow for enough parking spaces and would therefore encourage residents to park on the busy A690 road nearby. They also felt it was not in keeping with the surrounding area.
