RAIDERS have stolen money intended for disabled and disadvantaged children after smashing their way into Sunderland Minster.
The burglars stole cash from charity collection tins, children's musical instruments and a laptop during the break-in, which happened between 9.30pm on Thursday and 8am on Friday.
They broke the doors and window to force entry, leaving the minster with glass all over the floor, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.
Details of the break-in were only released over the weekend.
Parishioners and church leaders are disgusted and feel the thieves have violated a sacred place of worship
The raid happened hours after a charity concert for special schools in Sunderland, during which the cash had been collected to help charities in the city.
Children from Springwell Dene School were left doubly upset after the thieves stole four guitars, worth an estimated £2,000, which they had left behind in the Minster.
The Reverend Martin Anderson, team vicar at Sunderland Minster, said: "A sacred space has been violated.
"They've done a tremendous amount of damage. I'm upset and confused at what feels like an attack on a public building which is used for the benefit of the community of Sunderland.
"The minster is a public place that has a good reputation in the city. It is a place where people can feel welcome - a place of learning, a place of prayer."
Anyone with information was last night urged to contact Sunderland CID, on 0191-454 7555.
