A FORMER Green Howards soldier is to become the Army's highest ranking officer.
General Sir Richard Dannatt will become Chief of the General Staff in August next year. He takes over the post from General Sir Mike Jackson.
General Sir Richard Dannatt, 54, was commanding officer of the 1st Battalion The Green Howards from 1989 to 1991 and Colonel of the Regiment from 1994 to 2003.
He and his wife, Philippa, live in Norfolk. Both graduated from Durham University.
He is the second Green Howard in just over a decade to be appointed to the post.
Sir Peter Inge became Chief of the General Staff in 1992.
The Green Howards has its headquarters in Richmond and recruits across North Yorkshire and Teesside.
