A SIXTH form student has landed a junior title at an international judo competition.
Jan Gosiewski, from Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, in Darlington, also fought in the senior section at the Zuidland Open, in Holland.
Jan, who studies maths, physics and chemistry, competed in the two competitions on the same day.
He won five fights to win the under-18 title, but lost his two bouts in the senior competition.
He said: "I was delighted to win the under-18 trophy and was pleased that I performed well in the senior competition where my opponents had the physical advantage and were much more experienced.
"I held my own and was in control for much of the time. This has boosted my confidence and will stand me in good stead for the future."
Jan has also secured sponsorship from Acorn Dairy, in Darlington, for the coming year. It will go towards travel, accommodation and equipment.
A spokesman for the dairy said: "We are very keen to support and be associated with Jan.
"He is an up-and-coming local sportsman who our community will follow with great interest and we believe he will be an excellent ambassador, not only for this area but also for the beneficial health qualities of organic milk."
