SOLDIERS based at Catterick Garrison yesterday lent their muscle to a campaign to spread a little festive cheer.
Squaddies from 5 Battalion REME spent 12 hours on rowing machines at the garrison's Tesco store, to raise money for the Giving Tree appeal in Darlington.
The battalion has been involved with the initiative for the last four years, and was keen to help again. They also spent much of yesterday packing bags at the Co-op supermarket, in Richmond.
The Giving Tree, organised by Darlington Borough Council's social services department, collects presents and food for vulnerable people of all ages to enjoy over Christmas.
Staff Sergeant Mick Cairns, of 5 Battalion REME, said: "It is our pleasure to be involved in such a worthy cause and we hope our efforts will help to make Christmas more special for those in need in Darlington - and keep us fit."
Gifts and donations can be left, unwrapped, in Darlington at the Alpha FM studio, in Woodland Road, Asda, in Whinbush Way, Travel Care, at the North Road Morrisons store, and the Herald and Post office, in Duke Street.
The deadline for donations is Sunday.
