ROAD safety officers are pleased with the results of a campaign to increase the number of children wearing seat belts.
Officers from North Yorkshire County Council monitored 20 schools over four-week periods in 2003-4 and 2004-5.
The first initial monitoring showed that 19 per cent of children were not wearing seat belts on the journey to or from school.
In the final period, the number of unrestrained children fell to eight per cent.
Sheelagh Phillips, from the county council's road safety team, said: "These results are pleasing and show that the message appears to be getting across about the tragic consequences families can face if children are not properly restrained in vehicles.
"This is the second year we have carried out seat belt monitoring exercises and we hope that the figures continue to fall as we enter a new round of monitoring at schools over the next 12 months."
