KEY services in a town have been rewarded with an extra £1.8m grant after performing well in a number of areas.
Hartlepool Borough Council, along with the town's police and fire brigade, entered into a Local Public Service Agreement (LPSA) with the Government two years ago to try to meet a number of targets in selected services.
Several of the targets were met, which has resulted in additional funding of £1.4m being made available to Hartlepool council over the next two years.
In addition, the police and fire brigade will receive £426,000 between them.
The targets met included:
* Raising educational attainment among students
* Reducing domestic burglaries
* Reducing incidents of arson
* Increased participation in the home library service
* Increased recycling
* Cleaner streets
* Improving cost-effectiveness.
The council's assistant chief executive, Andrew Atkin, presented the outcome of the LPSA to a meeting of the cabinet last Friday.
Hartlepool Mayor Stuart Drummond said: "This is a fantastic achievement and I would like to thank everyone for contributing to the success. All of the targets were very challenging."
