A British soldier was killed and three others were injured in Cyprus when their army Land Rover rolled over and hit a tree, the Ministry of Defence said today.
Fusilier Daniel Whinham, 22, who had only been on the island a fortnight, died at the scene, while one of his colleagues was ''very seriously injured'', base spokesman Dennis Barnes said.
Fusilier Whinham, from Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, was serving with the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, based at Dhekelia on the island's south-eastern coast.
The most badly injured soldier, who was left unconscious with multiple injuries, and another with serious spinal injuries, are undergoing surgery at Larnaca General Hospital.
The fourth is set to be discharged with multiple bruises.
Three of the group were Fusiliers, while one was with the Royal Logistic Corps but attached to the regiment in Cyprus.
Fusilier Whinham was single, Mr Barnes added.
