A SPOT of horseplay is generally not associated with the elderly residents of a care home.

But curious pensioners braved the cold yesterday to welcome the latest addition to their stable - a four-year-old filly by the name of One and Only.

The racehorse has been purchased by Tony McGarry, general manager of the North Park Care Centre, in I'Anson Street, Darlington.

And he is hoping that the prospect of seeing the horse in action will lead to more outings for the centre's residents.

One and Only paid a visit to the centre yesterday - and residents could soon return the favour by going to see her in training at her stables, in Bolam, near Darlington, where she is being trained by David Thompson, of South View Racing.

The chestnut mare is no stranger to the track, having raced five times in Germany recently, winning on the flat over a mile and a furlong.

She could make an outing at Wolverhampton before Christmas and hopes are high among her elderly backers for a good performance.

George Carr, 81, of Darlington, said: "I like the look of her - I think she could go far."

Mr McGarry, who joined the centre six months ago, said: "A day out at the races is fun and exciting for everyone, and would be a wonderful opportunity for residents and their relatives to spend some quality time together.

"I would love to see the local community get involved in supporting her, too."

Many of the centre's 53 residents turned out to see One and Only yesterday morning, as the horse attracted a great deal of media attention. The guest of honour was treated to a carrot by head chef Judie Payne, who said: "Changes like this are all for the better."

She added: "Since Tony's come here, we are one big happy team."
