AN EXHIBITION of war memories opened in Teesside yesterday.
The exhibition, Memories: Not Forgotten Memories of the Years 1939-1945, opened at Redcar's Central Library, in Coatham Road.
It has been created with more than £7,000 from the Heritage Lottery's Home Front Recall Fund.
The display includes memorabilia, photographs, ration books and army kits, and draws on memories from local veterans.
Pauline Armistead, daughter of Teesside war hero Stan Hollis, said: "I can remember running after the Army buses when they came through Middlesbrough, shouting at the men: 'Are you my daddy?' My mum used to tell me how embarrassed she was."
Mrs Armistead's father was the only man to be awarded the Victoria Cross on D-Day.
She added: "My dad was a lovely man, but he didn't talk about the war very much or his medal. It was other people who used to tell me. He used to keep the Victoria Cross in a bottom drawer with all the bottle-tops he collected."
The exhibition runs until the end of January, before touring around Brotton in February, Skelton in March and Loftus in April.
