NEWSPAPER group Trinity Mirror has announced 29 job cuts at the Scottish edition of the Daily Mirror.
The news was broken at meetings with staff at the paper's offices in Glasgow yesterday.
Trinity said the cuts were due to challenging economic conditions, but denied the Scottish edition of the paper was folding.
The move follows planned job cuts at the Daily Record and Sunday Mail, also owned by Trinity, as well as redundancies at its regional papers.
While the group would not disclose how many cutbacks it was making in the North-East until consultation with staff was completed, the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has said there would be 15 to 20 redundancies at newspapers in Newcastle, which include the Evening Chronicle, Sunday Sun and The Journal - or about 3.5 per cent of the workforce.
There are also believed to be 18 redundancies at the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette. Staff are being asked to volunteer for redundancy.
