COUNCILLORS are likely to approve proposals next week to convert a Darlington shop into a restaurant.
Stewart Northall has applied to the borough council for permission to change the use of the second-hand goods shop, in Gladstone Street.
But residents of nearby Thorne Court have signed a petition opposing the development.
They say that there are already plenty of takeaways and restaurants in what is mainly a residential area.
Objectors are also concerned at the prospect of an increase in anti-social behaviour among people using takeaway shops, some of which are open until 4am at weekends.
However, council officers are backing the scheme and have urged planning committee members to support it when they meet next Wednesday.
A report to the committee says: "The objections raised as a result of local consultations are not considered to be sufficient reason to refuse the application."
