MORE than 1,000 houses in east Durham are feeling the heat thanks to a free home insulation initiative designed to help elderly people keep warm
Hundreds of households have received free loft and cavity wall insulation - with low energy light bulbs thrown in for good measure.
To mark the success of its project, Easington District Council has handed over £50 worth of gift vouchers to Mary Martin, of Murton, whose home was the 1,000th to benefit from the scheme.
The insulation scheme aims to help homeowners aged 60 and over reduce their fuel bills, stay warmer in their homes and combat cold-related illness.
Councillor Joan Freak, Easington council's executive member for social inclusion, said: "It's no surprise that this scheme is proving such a success.
"Good insulation is a great way of keeping down your fuel bills and staying warmer, and I would encourage anyone who hasn't yet applied to the scheme to call as soon as they can.''
She added: "We've already had an excellent demand with a lot of very satisfied customers.
"I'm sure it will continue to be very popular. However, funding is limited so apply now to avoid disappointment.''
Residents who are over 60 and are interested in the scheme are asked to telephone organisers on 0800 833018.
