VOLUNTEERS were busy yesterday putting up 47 Christmas trees outside shops around a town centre, ready for traders to attach the lights.
One Christmas tree has already been erected outside the post office in Barnard Castle, and another will be put up in Market Place this week.
Jill Bacon, a partner in Teesdale Conservation Volunteers, which supplied and put up all the trees, said: "The town is going to really sparkle once all the lights are fitted and switched on."
Businesses which have a tree put in front of their premises are paying £15 each under the scheme, which has been organised by Teesdale Marketing, a group set up to boost the local economy.
The town council pays for coloured lights in the main roads, but it is felt the trees will help to attract shoppers.
