ELDERLY people across Darlington have received a free bag to help them be seen in the dark.
Darlington Borough Council was one of the first in the region to offer high-visibility bags to pensioners.
The See Me shopping bags, which have reflective strips on them, are designed to help pedestrians be seen in dark winter evenings and mornings.
The bag is lightweight with a reflective strip that can easily be seen by motorists. They also contain a leaflet with more information on how to stay safe.
In recent weeks, they have been distributed to various groups including Harrowgate Hill Thursday Group, the Hearing Impaired Group, the Crown Street library's reading group for the visually impaired and the St John's Luncheon Club.
Bryan Thistlethwaite, cabinet member for adult services, said: "In winter, it is more important than ever for older people to think about their safety when walking around the borough."
