Paul Gascoigne's 39-day reign as manager of Kettering has ended in acrimony with chairman Imraan Ladak claiming the former England midfielder was ''under the influence of alcohol before, during and after several first-team games and training sessions''.

The 38-year-old released a statement insisting he was ''committed'' to Kettering and wanted to buy Ladak's stake in the Nationwide Conference North club.

But Ladak claims Gascoigne's problems with alcohol have resurfaced.

''I have tried to help Paul through this difficult period but gave an undertaking to the board prior to my takeover that if Paul hit the bottle I would remove him as manager.

''Paul has not reacted well to the news and has made numerous threats that if I do not sell him the club he will use his name and the media to turn the players and supporters against me.

''This has already begun with Paul calling a number of the first team last night, under the influence of alcohol. Paul even told players not to report for training at MK Dons, where they were due to commence full-time training.''

Ladak has moved swiftly to appoint Kevin Wilson, who was the previous manager.

''We are delighted to confirm that Kevin Wilson has accepted our offer to rejoin Kettering Town Football Club as manager. This position is for a period of three years and will commence immediately,'' Ladak told Kettering fans' website www.poppynet.co.uk.

Ladak insists Gascoigne offered to quit on Sunday night after learning that Ladak planned to sack him, and has urged the man he called his ''childhood idol'' to seek ''professional medical assistance'' for his problems.

''Last night's conversation was a result of 37 separate incidents I have had to deal with since the appointment of Paul Gascoigne as manager,'' said Ladak.

''I spoke to Paul, who told me 'I will save you the pleasure of sacking me. I will walk away. I quit'.

''I find myself in a position where I feel it would be detrimental to the football club to list all these incidents.

"But following a statement which has been posted on Paul Gascoigne's official website, I also have a duty to myself, the football club and its supporters to respond to Paul's comments.''

Gascoigne was hugely critical in a statement posted on his official personal website www.paulgascoigne.biz, accusing Ladak of reneging on a promise to invest in the team and of interfering in team affairs.

''Imraan spoke about substantial funds being made available to take this club forward and I'm yet to see them materialise,'' he added.

''On the way to watch the reserves, Imraan rang up the reserve-team manager and said to drop the two forwards that the manager had included and told him to play his own choice of forwards.

''The reserves were set up for us to take a look at new players and he totally undermines the football management decisions.

''I've asked him not to be in my office and asked him if he could use somewhere else to conduct his business.

''He does not speak to sponsors or away team directors. This was left up to myself to meet and greet sponsors. He has my whole staff a nervous wreck and I can't continue in this way.''
