Coxhoe Athletic have yet to win in the league, having drawn just twice in 14 attempts in the Wearside League but, they belied their bottom-of-the-table position when they met Nissan SSC Sunderland in the second round of the Sunderland Shipowners' Cup.
Coxhoe had to come back from conceding an early goal when Matthew Raine struck. But Coxhoe battled back and they deserved to level when Stephen Clifford restored parity with 20 minutes remaining.
The visitors then scored another two goals in a frenetic eight-minutes spell. Robert Tones put them in front and Andy Soffit earned them their place in the next round with 12 minutes remaining.
Only two games went ahead in the league and Cleadon SC moved to within a couple of points of leaders Birtley Town with two games in hand when they ended 2-0 ahead of Ryhope CW.
Mark Johnson celebrated his return, opening the scoring with a header after 15 minutes and Danny Nixon also headed home ten minutes later.
Ferryhill Athletic remain second bottom after losing to Teesside Athletic.
Billy Millington gave them a perfect start scoring after just three minutes before James Kesterton failed to convert a penalty, although he atoned in the 15th minute, netting Athletic's second goal.
Just before the break, Millington made it three. In the second half Teesside were awarded a second penalty and this time the kick was entrusted to Millington but he also failed and missed out on a hat-trick.
