DAVID HODGSON is ready to tell Brian Close to take inspiration from Darlington hero Craig Liddle by forcing the Irishman to play through the pain barrier.
Close will surprisingly be included in Hodgson's squad for tomorrow's game at Shrewsbury Town, just days after being told he would face up to three months on the sidelines with an ankle injury.
It was suggested by a surgeon at the weekend that Close could make a better recovery by playing with the problem, rather than undergoing an operation.
Hodgson last night welcomed the news and was quick to make comparisons between Close and Liddle, whose bravery earned him legend status among Darlington fans.
Liddle retired from the professional game last season after making 322 appearances for Quakers - several despite injury.
"It is a very similar scenario to Lids," said Hodgson. "He played through a lot of pain and Brian is the kind of player who can do the same."
Liddle's determination to play on effectively forced his retirement at the age of 33. However, Hodgson has insisted that he will do everything in the best interests of Close's long-term fitness.
"We want to do what is best for Brian and if were told he could not play for three months then we would have to accept it," said Hodgson. "But we've spoken to the surgeon and he feels Brian should get through the next couple of months."
Joey Hutchinson is fit after a calf strain and will replace skipper Matt Clarke, who is ruled out with a leg injury. Hodgson will rest Anthony Peacock and admitted that there is "every chance" Phil Stamp will make his full debut at Gay Meadow tomorrow.
Hodgson has confirmed Peacock and Carlos Logan will be offered new contracts when their current deals expire at the end of the month.
Shelton Martis, Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu and Clark Keltie are also out of contract on January 4.
Darlington's hopes of progressing in the FA Youth Cup were ended by Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
Martin Gray's youngsters were beaten by a single goal at the 96.6 TFM Darlington Arena.
