A RIVERSIDE area which boasts a wealth of Roman remains in the twin towns of Malton and Norton is to become a public park in a £172,000 scheme.
The Castle Garden site, currently a derelict area, is a scheduled ancient monument and includes the remains of Malton Castle, the Roman Fort and a Jacobean prodigy house. It was partially excavated by BBC's Time Team when it visited Malton a decade ago.
Project leader Di Keal said English Heritage is keen to promote the historic interest of the site with signage explaining its wealth of history, while Norton Youth Nature Watch is also involved in the wildlife part of the venture.
A future plan is to set up a Friends of the Castle Garden group, and open air concerts and theatre performances are also envisaged, said Mrs Keal.
Funding is being sought from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Ryedale District Council and English Heritage.
