THE recent success of their four current internationals has delighted Durham but left them with a dilemma as they look ahead to life in division one.
They might even have a fifth international by the time they start against Kent at Canterbury on April 19 as paceman Mick Lewis is in the Australian one-day squad for a three-match series against New Zealand starting on Saturday.
If he retains his place he and Durham skipper Mike Hussey will be involved in three ODIs in Bangladesh on April 23, 26 and 28.
The last of England's seven ODIs in India is on April 22, and as the first Test against Sri Lanka starts on May 11 in a summer of international cricket which ends with the final ODI against Pakistan on September 10 Durham are certainly not going to see anything of Steve Harmison.
Paul Collingwood and Liam Plunkett might conceivably be available for the first home match against Lancashire at Riverside, starting on April 26. But that would be very doubtful if they enjoyed further success in India.
Durham coach Martyn Moxon said: "I'm delighted for the players, particularly Liam, because for anyone to make his England debut is a fantastic achievement. To have three in the team is a great feather in the club's cap and makes people aware we are alive and kicking.
"I have spoken to Mike Hussey about the Australian situation and he says Mick is in the squad because Glenn McGrath is being rested, but that's not to say he won't be required in Bangladesh.
"We are allowed only two overseas replacements next season and at the moment we are thinking it's probably not worth using them up for two games at the start.
"That might change if Mark Davies isn't going to be fit and neither Liam nor Mick look like being available. Mark had a recent scan on his back which showed the stress fracture is healing but he still can't bowl."
After his two centuries in the three-Test series against West Indies Hussey now has a Test average of 120.3 to go with his ODI average of 123.5 from 18 matches.
He initially got into the Test side because Justin Langer was injured, but then moved down to No 5 when Langer returned, with Michael Clarke and Simon Katich being dropped from the side which lost the Ashes.
Clarke has responded with his maiden double century in a Pura Cup match, but Durham are resigned to Hussey now being a fixture in the Australian side. As things stand, once he arrives at the start of May he should be available until September, and even then the proposed series against Zimbabwe must be in danger.
Further news of Lewis is that he was the subject this week of the first video review in Australian domestic cricket over an allegation of ball tampering.
He was seen applying his thumb nail to the ball during Victoria's Pura Cup match against Queensland, but the umpires decided he had done nothing illegal.
There has also been some controversy surrounding Brad Williams, who replaced Lewis at Durham at the end of last season.
He has been suspended by Western Australia for the rest of the season after being dropped for the Pura Cup match against Tasmania and refusing to play in the one-day ING Cup game which preceded it.
