HUNDREDS of residents were told to stay indoors with their windows closed , as police cordoned of a large area of Middlesbrough, following a major gas leak near the town centre, today.
The drama unfolded when a gas main on the site of the old Middlesbrough General Hospital was fractured shortly after 10am.
The hospital site was sold to a house builder and cleared two years ago.
Ayresome Street, Ayresome Green Lane, Acklam Road from the Newport roundabout to Longford Street and from West Lane to the town centre was sealed off by Cleveland Police, as fire crews stood by.
