A WILDLIFE trust will work with a Weardale school in part a joint initiative.
Durham Wildlife Trust will work with Wolsingham School and Community College as part of a Lottery-funded project called Hearts and Minds.
It will run over three years and will work with three secondary schools, one each year, to help develop curriculum activities around the theme of heritage.
Each school receives a £10,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund and Durham Wildlife Trust's support throughout the year to develop the series of activities.
The trust's education officer, Helen Cheetham, said: "The Heart and Minds project is an exciting opportunity to get young people engaged and motivated by heritage projects, a subject traditionally viewed as rather dull and dusty."
The project is taking place nationally in four English regions. At the end of the project, the work done across the regions will be condensed and made available to schools.
