WARNINGS have been issued to householders to be on their guard for bogus workmen trying to cash in during bad weather.
Trading standards officers say that, despite warnings, people are still being ripped off.
Michael Welsh, Hartlepool Borough Council's principal trading standards officer, said: "It is this time of year when you can expect an unsolicited knock at the door from a roofer who is trying to cash in after bad weather.
"Great, you may think, but it may not be the best solution to the problem - if it exists at all - as many of these door-knockers are looking to prey on unwary homeowners, particularly the vulnerable.
"Many of these roofers are opportunist, who will be using the excuse of high winds to do work that does not need to be done and charge excessively for it in the process. "We have evidence that there are still rogue roofers out there and, unfortunately, they are giving the trade a bad name."
Mr Welsh advised that any reputable roofer should provide written details of the right to cancel within seven days.
He added that, after a cold-call, people should contact their insurance company first for advice.
Secondly, people should get at least three estimates from reputable firms for any improvement work.
Vehicle registration details should be taken and any advertised telephone number to pass on to the council's trading standards team. It can be contacted on (01429) 523362.
