The UK's Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences (Cels), has appointed IAN SHOTT as non-executive chairman.
He will lead the board to develop Cels' strategy, providing leadership, support and co-ordination for the life sciences and healthcare economies in the North-East.
Mr Shott has a strong pharmaceutical background and has held senior positions in some of the world's leading life sciences corporations.
David Allison, director of business and industry at One NorthEast, said: "He is an accomplished business leader and, with his knowledge and global experience, comes a wealth of industry contacts which will benefit Cels and the region as a whole."
Mr Shott said: "One of my first tasks as chairman will be to strengthen the board, followed by an intensive search for a new chief executive officer to spearhead the organisation."
Mr Shott is technical vice-president of the Institute of Chemical Engineers and a visiting professor at Newcastle University.
