A DUTCHMAN was still being questioned last night about the murder of a North-East man stabbed to death outside a bar in Amsterdam.

Detectives investigating the incident, which left one Teesside man dead and another seriously injured, arrested the man at his home on Friday night.

A police spokesman in Amsterdam said: "We have a 42-year-old man in custody who we arrested in his home.

"We made the arrest after some witnesses came forward and gave a description of a man, which combined with CCTV footage and information from police colleagues."

Cleveland Police will hold a Press conference today when it is believed the identity of the dead man could be revealed.

On Saturday, two Middlesbrough detectives flew to Holland to assist Dutch police investigating the murder.

They said their first priority was to trace the two men's families.

Detective Superintendent Tony Hutchinson and Detective Sergeant Ian Henderson, of Cleveland Police's murder investigation team, will provide a link between Dutch police and officers in the UK.

It is thought the British victims could be Middlesbrough Football Club fans who were in Holland to watch their team's Uefa Cup tie on Thursday.

It is understood the men were not on any of the official trips to the game and may have watched the match in a bar.

They were stabbed outside Pinocchio's bar, in Amsterdam's Warmoestraat, at about 3am on Friday.

Dutch police said the men were offered drugs by a street dealer and got into an argument when they refused.

Police officers and a medical team resuscitated one of the men, but he died of his injuries later in a hospital.

The other man is being treated in a Dutch hospital. His injuries are not life threatening.

Cleveland Police are appealing for Middlesbrough fans who were in Amsterdam and who have information about the murder, to contact them on (01642) 301333.
