A US-born Darlington councillor yesterday helped to teach primary school pupils about the importance of Thanksgiving Day.
Councillor Cyndi Hughes spoke to youngsters at Mowden Infants School about the significance of Thanksgiving in her native US, which is celebrated by more than 300 million Americans.
Coun Hughes, chairman of the council's lifelong learning scrutiny committee, told the children about the Mayflower, which took religious dissidents from England to America in 1620, and about the celebrations that have taken place ever since among families in the US.
Coun Hughes said yesterday: "The message of thanksgiving is an important one. It is a balance to the materialism of Christmas, and a reminder to one and all of the importance of giving thanks for family, friends, health and community."
