WHEN Geordie comedian Ross Noble heard that he could buy a seat at Theatre Royal, Newcastle, he took it literally.
But it was only when he read the small print that he realised he would not be taking the seat home.
The theatre has launched a seat naming rights campaign in time for Christmas, which will enable theatre-goers to buy a seat with the stars.
The money raised from the campaign will go towards funding the largest expansion of the venue in its 170-year history.
January will see work begin on a £5.2m development in Market Street, creating an education centre, booking hall and foyer.
The campaign has gained support from stars that include Dame Judi Dench and Nigel Havers, and now the people of the North-East have the chance to own a small piece of history.
All the seats at the Theatre Royal can be named, including the gallery and boxes, from £125.
Richard Berg Rust, director of development at the theatre, said: "This would make an ideal gift for someone with a passion for theatre, or as a memorial for a loved one who spent happy times at the theatre.
"An engraved brass plaque will be placed on the back of your seat with your special message and you, or the person you have named the seat for, will also receive a signed certificate.
"The Theatre Royal holds very fond memories for a lot of people and this is a perfect way for them to share in the history of this wonderful building."
As well as Ross Noble, other stars who have already named a seat include Richard Briers.
