POLICE have launched a murder investigation after a man who suffered head injuries in an assault later died in hospital.

Michael Grey, 45, was assaulted in the area between the Plaza Tavern public house and the post office at the top of Ellesmere Road, in Newcastle, on Friday, November 11,

Detectives know that Mr Grey, a careworker, left his home in the west end of the city at about 6.40pm on the day of the assault. He was taken to hospital at 8.20pm with head injuries.

Officers believe there were a lot of people in the area where Mr Grey is believed to have been assaulted and are appealing for people to come forward.

Detective Superintendent Barbara Franklin, who is leading the murder investigation, said: "We believe there were at least two people who helped him off the ground following the assault and would appeal to them to come forward and help with our investigation."

Mr Grey is described as white, 5ft 8in, slim, with collar length dark brown hair. He was wearing glasses, a black leather jacket, jeans, navy shirt and black trainers.
