A NORTH-East soldier has led his troops to glory in one of the world's toughest military competitions.
Captain Tom Winney, of the 1st Battalion The Green Howards, helped his Army company land a coveted bronze medal in the gruelling Cambrian Patrol contest.
The 27-year-old, from Carlton, near Sedgefield, County Durham, led members of Support Company in the event in South Wales.
The group, which included Lance Corporal Nicky Cooper, from Darlington, competed against nearly 100 teams from around the world to finish in the top three.
The two-day and night contest included a 35-mile march, navigating the tough terrain of the Brecon Beacons, bitterly cold river crossings, close target reconnaissance, first-aid tests and simulated enemy attacks.
