VINTAGE tractor enthusiasts took along their own piece of history when they visited an RAF base yesterday.
Members of the National Vintage Tractor and Engine Club spent the day at RAF Linton on Ouse, near York.
Trevor Harland, from the nearby village of Alne, took along his 1930s Fordson tractor, which turned out to be the same model as those used to tow bomb trailers around Linton during the Second World War.
Colin Farrer, from Kirk Hammerton, explained that the RAF tractors would have been painted Air Force blue.
He said: "Models built between 1938 and 1940 were imported from the Irish Free State and were painted orange. When offloaded and lined up on the dockside, they were an easy target for the Luftwaffe, so the War Office ordered them to be repainted."
Club members have promised to help with requests to display vintage tractors and engines on open days as a thank you for yesterday's visit.
