VOLUNTEERS have pledged to continue their efforts to stop fly-tippers ruining a rural environment.
Heighington Parish Litter Group said it collected more than 40 bags of rubbish in two hours on its latest clean-up operation.
Fifteen volunteers tackled the rubbish, which had accumulated on the grass verges in Heighington and the surrounding area.
And the group said its work would go on in the future, as the message did not appear to be getting home to those who dump their rubbish.
Lou Bedocs, of the group, said: "Sadly, it would appear that there is still a need to clear the litter as so many people think it is acceptable to throw their rubbish out for others to clear away. More than 40 dustbin sacks were filled in just two hours. Several car parts and bicycle parts were also removed from the verges.
"Fly-tipping has been increasing in the area and, despite reporting it to the council, it remains rotting on the roadside."
Group members have also been collecting discarded beer glasses between Heighington and School Aycliffe.
The next litter pick will take place on Saturday, December 10. Volunteers can meet at 10am at Heighington village hall, Redworth village hall or the entrance to The Chestnuts, School Aycliffe.
