AN exercise class to encourage older people to get active is being introduced across Darlington.
Get Everyone Motivated (Gem) is a series of gentle exercise classes for people over 50 that was set up by Darlington Borough Council's warden services eight years ago.
Since its launch, it has been enjoyed by residents of sheltered housing schemes, with the average age of participants being 85. There are now plans to spread Gem outside sheltered housing so older people who live independently can get involved.
The move is part of the Zone Active project, launched in May and funded by Sport England and The Big Lottery Fund, which aims to increase the number of people in the Eastbourne, Lascelles and Park East areas of Darlington taking part in sport and physical activity. Successful taster sessions have been held by Zone Active.
Lee Vasey, the council's cabinet member for leisure services, said: "Gem is a great way for older people to take some gentle exercise and is also a really good social activity.
"It has already proved so popular with so many older people that I am delighted that more people are being able to join in and get active."
The weekly Gem class will restart after Christmas on Wednesday, January 11, at Maidendale House, Burnside Road, from 11am to noon. There is a £1 charge per class.
A taster course will start on Friday at Clifton Road Community Centre, from 10.30am to 11.30am, for anyone interested in finding out more.
