DETECTIVES carrying out a murder-style investigation into the three-year mystery of a missing former miner are continuing inquiries in his home village.
Edward Donnelly was last seen at the home he shared with his sister Frances in Sacriston, County Durham, on March 25, 2002.
Despite extensive searches in and around the former colliery community, between Durham and Chester-le-Street, the bachelor, who was 53 at the time of his disappearance, is yet to be found.
Police revealed last week that they believe he was murdered.
Four people were arrested last week, three from Sacriston and one from Sherburn Hill, near Durham, in connection with the inquiry.
All four were released on Friday evening, pending further inquiries, police said.
The two men questioned, a 41-year-old from Sacriston and a 45-year-old from Sherburn Hill, were arrested on suspicion of murder, while women aged 39 and 65, were quizzed on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.
Detective Inspector Neil Malkin said that in the light of last week's developments in the long-running inquiry, the investigation would continue in the Sacriston area.
He said: "We believe he has been murdered and we have a team of investigators dedicated to uncovering the truth, and finding the person responsible. As has been the case all along, our inquiries in the coming weeks will continue to be focused on the community in Sacriston."
He appealed to anyone with information which may assist the inquiry, however insignificant they think it is, to contact police on 0191-375 2256, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
