THE first Briton to climb the world's 14 highest mountains will be honoured by civic dignitaries, MPs and climbers in Newton Aycliffe on Sunday.
Mountaineer Alan Hinkes will attend a reception at Aycliffe Leisure Centre organised by Sedgefield Borough Council, Rock Antics Indoor Climbing Wall and the Rock Solid Youth Climbing Club, from 6.30pm.
After a demonstration by young climbers, Mr Hinkes will present a show, called Full Mounty, at 7.30pm.
The show will highlight the ups and downs of his 18 years of climbing, which have taken in 28 expeditions and more than 50 miles of vertical ascent.
Mr Hinkes will then present awards to young climbers, the Alan Hinkes North-East Climbing Awards, which will become an annual award.
