DETECTIVES have appealed for "that one call" that will lead them to the killer of Jenny Nicholl.
Police said last night they believe someone in Jenny's home town of Richmond, North Yorkshire, knows what has happened to her.
Detective Inspector Peter Martin said: "I believe there is someone - almost certainly someone in the Richmond area - who can tell us where Jenny is and what has happened to her.
"We are following several lines of inquiry to lead us to that person, but in the meantime I need the call that will take me straight to them."
Jenny's mother, Ann Nicholl, yesterday spoke about her family's own efforts to learn the truth.
Friends and family have put up posters in shopping centres, motorway service stations, pubs, shops and bakeries across England and Scotland.
A page about Jenny, who disappeared when she was 19, has been posted on the Richmond website - www.richmond.org.uk
Jenny's uncle, Terry Nicholl, has also set-up a "blog" site - www.jennynicholl.blogspot.com - where well-wishers can leave their messages of support and find out details about the case.
Parents Brian and Ann Nicholl have bought items of clothing identical to those their daughter was wearing when they last saw her on June 30.
A mannequin will be dressed with the clothing and used by police to help jog memories.
Mrs Nicholl said: "The police have achieved a lot in publicising their appeals for information.
"But we are also working to the same end and have come up with some schemes that we have been able to put into effect with the help of family, friends and contacts."
Det Insp Martin said: "Ann, Brian and the rest of the Nicholl family and their friends are making an enormous effort to assist this investigation. They are doing an important job of spreading our appeals to every corner of the country.
"There is an enormous amount of goodwill towards this investigation, especially from Richmond residents, and it is my hope that someone out there will turn this feeling of support into practical action and phone me with the information we need."
Detectives are still anxious to find any of Jenny's friend or associates who visited Carlisle on July 9, or Jedburgh on July 14, when text messages were sent from Jenny's phone.
Anyone with information is asked to call (01423) 539334.
