GETTING rid of a pile of rubbish or rubble could hit householders in the pocket if they use cowboy operators to move it.
Middlesbrough Council is warning people to use authorised contractors - or face a fine of up to £5,000.
From Monday, new rules mean that it is the responsibility of the householder to ensure that waste is properly disposed of and not dumped behind the nearest hedge.
If the rubbish is illegally dumped and traced back to their home, they could face legal action as part of the clampdown on fly-tipping.
Councillor Barry Coppinger, executive member for community safety, said: "If you are dealing with a builder, landscape gardener, or someone doing a house clearance, ask them if they are a registered waste carrier.
"If they are not, you shouldn't have anything to do with them."
The council, which will be enforcing the new rules, provides a free disposal service - call (01642) 726001 - but also recommends using reputable waste disposal firms.
People can check if a company is registered by calling the Environment Agency on 08708 506506.
