A DURHAM-based charity is appealing for volunteers to befriend blind people and help them prepare for Christmas.
The County Durham Society for the Blind and Partially Sighted, which provides services to more than 2,000, is after people who could visit a blind person once a week or fortnight and help with tasks such as writing letters or Christmas cards.
Volunteer co-ordinator Sandra Hillyard said: "There is a huge demand for befriending volunteers, especially at this time of year.
"Christmas can be particularly difficult for visually-impaired people who live alone. Not only can it be a lonely time, but making contact with others through the sending of Christmas cards can be impossible when you are unable to see to read and write.''
Anyone interested in helping, or holding a fundraising event, can contact Ms Hillyard on 0191-386 8175.
