STAFF at Cleveland Fire Brigade are racing against time to fit as many smoke alarms as possible to raise money for the BBC Children in Need Appeal.
Firefighters at every station in the brigade, along with off-duty staff, are being sponsored to carry out the "Alarmathon".
SembCorp Utilities UK Ltd is donating the cost of every smoke alarm fitted in today's charity appeal.
The brigade normally carries out, on average, 60 safety checks a day, but is aiming for 200 in the hopes of raising £1,000.
Firefighters will be visiting homes to give general fire safety advice, help make an escape plan in case of a fire and fit smoke alarms or change batteries where installed, if needed.
Ian Harrington, Redcar station manager, said: "Our aim is to raise at least £1,000 for Children in Need, but the more the better.
