JASON Smithson, who began the season with Darlington Mowden Park, will make his first senior start for Newcastle Falcons in Sunday's match at Saracens.
It seemed the 23-year-old No 8's chances of making the breakthrough at the top level had gone when he was released from the academy, but he was put on contract after Phil Dowson suffered a neck injury two months ago.
With Colin Charvis playing for Wales this weekend and Owen Finegan carrying a knee injury, Smithson will be at No 8 for the Sky-televised Guinness Premiership clash.
Although Cory Harris returns at open side after injury, and lock Andy Perry is back from his four-week suspension, the continued absence of Scotland lock Stuart Grimes with a pectoral muscle injury again leaves the Falcons looking short of experience up front.
Following this week's decision to move forwards coach Ross Nesdale aside and promote academy coach Peter Walton in his place, Director of Rugby Rob Andrew said: "The players have recognised that these decisions are never easy and have trained well this week.
"They know that some of the responsibility for the decision lies with them. It has been a very difficult decision on a personal level, but one that had to be made for the good of the club.
"We are not that far away and we could have won all the games we have lost apart from when Bath blew us away in the second half.
"But we felt certain things were not quite coming together in the forwards. We don't want to go another six to eight weeks losing by a couple of points then find the pressure comes on big style like it did three years ago.
"We need to be far enough ahead so that the odd bit of bad luck or a poor refereeing decision does not affect the result. The players have to realise the importance of the situation and the vast majority do. Those who were in any doubt are no longer."
Mike McCarthy replaces Finegan at blind side and Micky Ward starts at loose head in place of Grant Anderson, while the backs are unchanged with Mark Mayerhofler and Anthony Elliott still injured.
Mowden Park will be seeking their third successive win in National Three North when they visit bottom club Kendal, who have yet to gain a point.
Lock Naude Pretorius is expected to be fit after surviving for only 35 minutes on his return to the club last week, and if there is any change it will involve Danny Brown starting at prop as there is a slight doubt about Ian Keeligan with a neck problem.
Two of last week's replacements, Mark Darlington and Ross Batty, are required to play for Northumbria University against Durham, but Newcastle Development player Eni Gisende is available for bench duties.
Darlington have hooker Rob Goddard back after injury in their only change to the starting XV for the home match against Tynedale.
A fifth win in six games took Tynedale above their hosts into fourth place last week and Darlington will not want this contest to come down to goal-kicking.
They moved ahead of Preston Grasshoppers as the division's leading try scorers last week with 32, but lost to the Lancashire side despite winning the try count 4-2.
Tynedale can choose between skipper Phil Belgian, who has been known to knock them over from the halfway line, and his reliable deputy, full back Will Massey.
After slipping to the bottom of North Two East, Stockton will be desperate for a win at home to Sandal, who are just above them.
Gary Skirving has a calf injury, so Danny Muirhead switches to loose head with Glyn Delmar coming in at hooker while Ian Fleetham stands by in case tight head Simon Brown is ruled out by a hand injury.
