A FAMILIAR landmark on the North-East skyline was given a one-day "makeover" by a team of volunteers yesterday.
The National Trust recruited a willing 60-strong workforce to carry out much-needed work to improve access to Penshaw Monument, on Penshaw Hill, off the A183 Chester-le-Street to Sunderland road.
Volunteers from local businesses, universities and a group of helpers from Boldon School, South Tyneside, gave up several hours to put in some hard labour.
The Victorian-built folly is a memorial to the life and work of John George Lambton, the first Earl of Durham.
It was modelled on the Greek temple of Theseus, although, at 70ft tall and 100ft long, it is twice as large as the Athenian original.
