AN electric car which brought the thrill of Formula One racing to a Bishop Auckland school has been chosen to go on show in Newcastle's Discovery Museum.
The car, built and raced by students at Bishop Barrington School, wasn't the fastest round the Croft circuit but it beat the field in the environmental stakes.
The car's green credentials won it a place in an exhibition at the museum. It was built for a Greenpower Challenge competition run by the Engineering Development Foundation.
Built of light aluminium and using batteries to power electric motors, the car has mountain bike brakes and BMX wheels.
It was constructed and driven by a team of mechanically minded 11 to 14-year-olds led by head boy Steven Bland. Technology teacher Steven Wilkinson said: "The car caught people's eye at Croft. We didn't win but we were asked to take part in the display."
Headteacher Bruce Guthrie said: "These young people are not only learning about the excitement and glamour of Formula One racing, but they are also discovering that resources are finite and they should be used responsibly in all our interests."
