A falls clinic will be launched when a £1m centre for elderly people opens in Darlington in February.
The centre, in Hundens Lane, will operate a service where people can be assessed, seek advice and talk to a nurse, physiotherapist or occupational therapist about falling or the fear of falling.
Almost 20,000 pensioners live in Darlington, along with 22,000 aged 45 to retirement age, and falling is the main cause of injury among older people.
Rehabilitation sister Nicky Fletcher said: "There are simple steps people can take. Things such as making sure your home is well-lit and ensuring there are no loose carpets or rugs to trip over."
