NORTH Yorkshire County Council is to spend £400,000 upgrading a waste disposal site at Burniston, near Scarborough.
The move comes after protests from householders concerned that it could be closed by Scarborough Borough Council.
Councillor Clare Wood, the council's executive member for environmental services said: "We recognise the value of the centre to local residents."
New equipment for recycling is to be installed, she added.
